In early spring, soon after the start of the pandemic when many Iranians went into lockdown, cartoonist, caricaturist and illustrator Alireza Pakdel learned of the hard work and sacrifices of the healthcare sector through various news outlets. The reports inspired the Iranian artist to produce a COVID crisis-themed illustration each night until the end of the quarantine.

“I continued this trend for more than two months,” Pakdel tells Medical Bag. “My goal was to instill hope in people and to also show gratitude towards healthcare workers.”

Iran has reported more than half a million confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 33,299 deaths due to the disease, according to the Johns Hopkins University of Medicine Coronavirus Resource Center, often straining medical facilities and professionals.

The 39-year old artist’s work depicts the long hours, fatigue and selflessness of the healthcare sector in their fight against the virus and serves as a reminder of measures that help curb the spread of COVID-19.
