BD Surgiphor Sterile Wound Irrigation System is now available as the first ready-to-use aqueous povidone-iodine (PVP-I) irrigation solution intended to mechanically loosen and remove wound debris.

BD Surgiphor is a pre-mixed, pre-labeled, single patient surgical wound irrigation system that uses PVP-I as a preservative within the solution. The PVP-I provides a broad-spectrum antimicrobial effect against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria and yeast, reducing the risk of unwanted microbial growth in the solution after the bottle is opened.

“Many hospitals today are mixing their own irrigation solutions to keep wounds clean,” said Kevin Kelly, worldwide president of Surgery for BD. “The introduction of BD Surgiphor will bring more simplicity to the sterile field and help meet best practices established by US and global health agencies.”

The wound irrigation system includes a 450mL compressible plastic bottle with terminally sterile 0.5% PVP-I formulation with 0.9% saline, phosphate iodide buffer and vitamin E TPGS (Surgiphor) and a 450mL compressible plastic bottle with terminally sterile 0.9% saline rinse (SurgiRinse).

BD Surgiphor should not be used in patients with known allergic reaction to any of the ingredients in the solutions or in neonates. The product should not be combined with other irrigation or antiseptic solutions due to potential reactions and reduction in efficacy.
