The iHEARtest, an at-home hearing assessment kit, is now available for purchase over-the-counter and online, allowing users to screen and monitor their own hearing. The test is intended for use by adults ≥18 years old.
The kit includes a proprietary USB device and calibrated earphones. After downloading the screening software, the user can conduct the test using their personal computer. The test takes 6 minutes to complete and the user can immediately find out their level of hearing on a scale of 1 to 5 (profound hearing loss to good hearing). Results can be viewed online anytime with secure access to a HIPAA-compliant server.
The iHEARtest, developed and manufactured by iHEAR Medical, gained Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval in 2015. The approval of the test was based on a clinical study (N=96) which compared the iHEARtest with the WHO method for determining hearing impairment. The iHEARtest showed 85.9% level-by-level agreement and 100% agreement within ±1 level with respect to WHO grading using standard practice instruments.
