The TIME’S UP foundation has partnered with the American College of Physicians to create the TIME’S UP Healthcare organization with the goal of improving gender safety and equality, according to a publication in Annals of Internal Medicine.
The National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine’s 2018 report indicated that up to 50% of female medical students experienced sexual harassment from a superior, and 30% of the women who received the National Institutes of Health Career Development Award experienced sexual harassment, with many reporting that the event negatively affected professional confidence and career advancement. Additionally, women who were academic physicians earned 10% less than men in a comparable position, and women are severely underrepresented in higher ranking positions in medical schools.
The aim of the TIME’S UP healthcare organization is to create a safe workplace environment with more equality and inclusivity for all healthcare work positions. The organization will increase attentiveness to discrimination, create action plans, provide education opportunities, and offer access to legal representation.
