Jersey Shore University Medical Center announces today that Mark Martens, M.D., chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Jocelyn A. Carlo, M.D., Obstetrics/Gynecology, performed the first Acessa procedure in New Jersey. The procedure is used for the treatment of uterine fibroids.
Uterine fibroids are benign growths on the uterus that usually occur during childbearing years. While most fibroids are asymptomatic, some may grow and cause heavy menstruation, painful sexual intercourse, and urinary tract problems. In rare cases, fibroids may complicate pregnancy. As many as 3 out of 4 women have uterine fibroids by the time they reach 50.

The Acessa procedure is a minimally invasive laparoscopic procedure that delivers radiofrequency energy to destroy the fibroids. After treatment, the fibroids are re-absorbed by the surrounding tissue. Acessa allows the doctor to treat only the fibroids, while preserving normal function of the uterus. Patients typically go home the same day with little pain, and enjoy a rapid return to normal activities. More than 300 women have been successfully treated with Acessa.
